It would be a mistake to think that Maritain saw things only from the outside. He certainly was not a novelist. But he was a writer of real pedigree, like his godfather, Léon Bloy, and of even better lineage. Most important of all, he had undertaken as a layman to challenge the Prince of this World on his own terrainby working to resow the seed of the Gospel, without the slightest concession, in that profane culture where the perfume of Bethany had become almost imperceptible in the worldly winds of many centuries: by elaborating a philosophy of nature, a philosophy of history, a philosophy of art and a political philosophy, diversely and supplely joined to a metaphysics guided by light from above.
2). His description of their first meeting leads the reader to the same conclusion. "I found myself before one of those men who give the impression of having come from another world. This came from the fact that he never hesitated to speak right off of God, of His relation with our souls, and of the respect He has for them and for their mysterious liberty'' (see below, p. 36). Much later, in 1968, Green wrote: "How I would like to see you and hear you speak of all these things, which are the most important things in the world" (Letter 221).
This was the beginning of a spiritual adventure of a kind that the world will never understand and that would last for almost a half centurynot to mention its prolongation somewhere, out of this world. 1 The friendship between Jacques Maritain and Julien Green seems to have held in both their lives a place that was very special and indeed quite exceptional. Maritain had many other friends in the world of arts and letters, and the warmth of his affection, the welcome, and the devotion he showed them are very well known.
