Truly own hand-held and wearable applied sciences might be small and unobtrusive and make allowance entry to details and computing as a rule and in such a lot condition. Complimentary, environment-based applied sciences make artifacts of our surrounding international computationally available and facilitate use of daily environments as a ubiquitous computing interface. The overseas Symposium on hand held and Ubiquitous Computing, held for the 1st time in September 1999, used to be initiated to enquire hyperlinks and synergies in those advancements, and to narrate advances in own applied sciences to these in environment-based applied sciences. The HUC ninety nine Symposium used to be organised by way of the college of Karlsruhe, particularly by way of the Telecooperation workplace (TecO) of the Institute for Telematics, in shut collaboration with ZKM Karlsruhe, which generously hosted the development in its actually inspiring middle for humanities and Media know-how. The symposium was once supported through the organization of Computing equipment (ACM) and the German computing device Society (Gesellschaft f r Informatik, GI) and held in cooperation with a couple of targeted curiosity teams of those clinical societies. HUC ninety nine attracted various paper submissions, from which the overseas programme committee chosen 23 high quality contributions for presentation on the symposium and for inclusion in those court cases. furthermore, posters have been solicited to supply an outlet for novel principles and late-breaking effects; chosen posters also are incorporated with those court cases. The technical programme used to be additional complemented through 4 invited keynote addresses, and panel sessions.

Design Probes for Handheld and Ubiquitous Computing 19 Harold Thimbleby is Professor of Computing Research at Middlesex University, London, and Research Director for the School of Computing Science. Harold gained his PhD in 1981 in Human-Computer Interaction, and much of his research since then has been concerned with making complex devices easier to use.

3 Going Places Equipped with pressure, bend sensor, and shock sensor, children can turn an exercise session into a study of their own body. In one example, children can design their own pedometers by monitoring the readings from sensors that they embed in their shoes. In addition to recording the sensor values for determining the speed and the total distance traveled during the exercise session, the sensors’ values can be used to generate music as they walk or can be studied to learn about the details of one’s walking habits.

2 Wireless Communications Device Due to differing wireless service standards in the United States and Europe, two different communication devices were used. 2 KBPS, CDPD wireless IP modem. The Minstrel fits snugly onto the SPT 1500, only adding a few inches to the overall dimensions of the device. In Europe, where the standard is GSM, we used an Options International Snap-On modem in conjunction with a GSM compatible cell phone. 6 KBPS with data compression. 3 Web Server The web server hosts all of the pages and scripts used in the application.
