Anderson was the third child of Irwin and Emma Smith Anderson. He was born in Camden, Ohio, on September 13, 1876. His parents led a transient life, moving from place to place searching for work. Sherwood attended school intermittently while working at odd jobs to help support his family. At age 17, Anderson moved to Chicago, where he worked as a manual laborer and attended business school at night. S. Army to serve in Cuba during the SpanishAmerican War. After the war, Anderson moved to Springfield, Ohio, to be near his brother and to attend Wittenberg Academy.

Following his graduation from high school in 1985, Alexie entered Gonzaga College in Spokane on a full scholarship. After two years, he transferred to Washington State University in Pullman. He planned to be a doctor but decided to change his major after fainting three times in an anatomy class. After taking a creative writing class with poetry teacher Alex Kuo, Alexie began to write regularly and to publish in magazines such as The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Journal of Ethnic Studies, New York Quarterly, Ploughshares, and Zyzzyva.
